6 Tips for Improving Your Sketching Skills

Hello Artists!

I’m back! (Yay!). In today’s post we’ll explore 6 different ways to improve your sketches to take your finished drawings to the next level.

Let’s jump right into it.

1. Start with shapes:

A good way to build your sketching skills is to start with basic shapes like circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, hexagons, etc... By focusing on these simple geometric shapes, you can learn to draw more complex objects with ease.

2. Use references:

If you're struggling to replicate a specific object or scene, consider using references. These can be photographs, other sketches, or even real-life objects. Trying to sketch something from memory can be a challenge, but having a reference can help you better understand the dimensions and details and colors of the subject.

3. Learn basic anatomy:

If you aspire to sketch figures or characters, it's important to have a basic understanding of anatomy. This includes the proportion of the body, the placement of features like eyes and nose, and how the body moves. By studying these fundamentals, you can create more realistic and dynamic sketches.

If you are sketching animals, I find it great to watch videos of the specific animal you want to draw and pause it at any moment to sketch them in different poses.

4. Sketch from life:

For this sketching step, I highly encourage you to grab a pen/pencil and a sketchbook or a blank piece of paper and step outside. Then just draw all the different things you see. Practise drawing the same subject over and over again but in different angles. This will help you build your confidence, anatomy skills and will train your eye for colors, details and poses.

5. Take breaks:

Sketching can be mentally and physically draining, especially if you're focused on a complex composition. Taking breaks can help you clear your mind, reduce fatigue, and approach your sketches with a renewed enthusiasm. I recommend you go for a walk, eat and drink water, sleep and rest.

6. Share your work:

Finally, sharing your work with others can be a great source of motivation and feedback. Consider joining an online art community like Deviant Art, Discord art servers, YouTube or sharing your sketches with friends and family. The more you put yourself out there, the more you'll grow as a sketch artist.
