Hey artists!
How was your week? In today’s post, we‘ ll explore some tips and tricks to help you master watercolour and bring your creativity to life.
Watercolor painting is a beautiful and expressive way to explore your creativity. It is a versatile medium that can create a range of effects and emotions through blending, layering, and controlling the flow of the paint.
Let’s get going!

1. Start with the Right Materials
The first step to creating a successful watercolour painting is to choose the right materials.
High-quality watercolour paper is essential, as it is designed to handle the wetness of the paint and will not buckle or warp as you work.
You will also need the right brushes, preferably natural hair brushes, as they hold water better and produce smoother marks. Finally, the paint itself should be of good quality, as you will get better results with finer pigments.
2. Control Your Water
The way you control the water in your brush is key to creating a successful watercolour painting.
Start by wetting your paper before you begin, and then use your brush to add water to the areas where you want the paint to flow.
Keep a damp brush nearby to blend colours together or create a wet-on-wet effect. Experiment with different levels of water to see how they affect the look of your painting.
3. Layer Your Colours
Watercolour is a transparent medium, which means that layering colours is an effective way to create depth and dimension in your painting. Always start with the lighter colours, and gradually build up the layers with darker ones. Wait for each layer to dry before adding the next one to avoid muddiness.
4. Try Different Techniques
There are many techniques you can use with watercolour to achieve different effects.
For example, you can use a dry brush to create texture, lift colour with a flat brush, or create a resist effect by using masking fluid. Experiment with different approaches to see which ones work best for your style.
5. Plan Your Composition
Before you start painting, it's helpful to plan out the composition of your piece. Use a pencil to sketch out the basic shapes and areas of colour, and then use your watercolour paint to bring it to life. Planning your composition will help you avoid mistakes and make the most of the medium.
6. Practice, Practice, Practice
Watercolour is a medium that needs practice to master. The more you paint, the better you'll get. Don't be discouraged if your first few paintings don't turn out the way you want them to.
I also encourage you to dive deeper and research online for YouTube videos, courses, books, etc. Keep experimenting and practising, and you'll soon find your own unique style.
Here are a few books on watercolour I recommend you read:
- Watercolor for beginners by Emma Witte (Black Chalk Co.)
